![]() The current power grab by the army and the people’s daring to claim it back through protest has reminded many of the 1988 pro-democracy movement. 14 February 2021: A group of youths take part in a hip-hop performance with an anti-coup theme in front of graffiti depicting the iconic three-fingered salute in Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city. After his release, he joined the NLD when it contested a by-election in 2012. Reportedly, among the many people detained during the coup’s initial raids were a filmmaker, two writers and a reggae singer.Īmong them was Ko Zayar Thaw, who won a parliamentary seat in a district once considered a military stronghold, and was a member of Generation Wave, a hip-hop collective that challenged the former ruling junta through sly lyrics. It has imprisoned poets and painters, rappers and writers over the years. In fact, Myanmar’s military junta have long seen the arts as a menacing nuisance. Traditions of protest art in Myanmar are as old as the military’s propensity for repression.
